Elevating emotional wellness: unconventional methods for a healthier workforce

Emotional wellness has emerged as a critical priority for corporates in India, influencing various aspects of workplace dynamics. As organisations recognise the profound impact of employee well-being on productivity, retention, and innovation, they are increasingly investing in mental health initiatives. Research highlights significant benefits, including improved teamwork and reduced turnover, underscoring the need for a supportive work environment. By prioritising emotional wellness, companies enhance employee satisfaction and drive overall business success. The CII found that employees with good mental health are 30% less likely to take sick leaves, resulting in lower healthcare costs for companies. Emotional wellness contributes to healthier team interactions, enhancing collaboration and reducing conflict. According to a Great Place to Work India report, organisations that emphasise emotional wellness see a 30% improvement in teamwork and collaboration. Prioritising emotional wellness fosters a positive workplace culture, attracting top talent and improving employer branding.

What organisations can do to support emotional wellness:

  • Promoting accessibility: Leaders should receive training to identify signs of emotional distress and respond supportively. Companies should implement mandatory mental health training for leaders to increase their awareness and investment in employees' well-being.
  • Inclusion of mental health in care plans: It is vital to prioritise employees' mental health and well-being. Holding sessions that explain the care plans with the inclusion of mental health exhibits trust and strengthens relationships with employees.
  • Establish an employee assistance programme: Many companies use an employee assistance programme (EAP) to support workplace mental health. However, some employees may hesitate to use these resources due to fear of stigma or a lack of understanding. Offering direct access to mental health professionals, both via phone and in person, can help. Make it easy for employees and their families to access these resources.

Methods companies can use to boost mental health in the workplace:

  • Training on mental health: Leaders should engage in expert-curated programmes spanning leadership, manager training, and team bonding, fostering a culture of mental wellness that translates into more cohesive teams.
  • Mental health resources: Provide modules, self-help tools, one-on-one counselling, and organisational diagnostics that target the root causes of employees' emotional states.
  • Pulse-checks: Regular pulse checks act as a feedback loop for companies to understand areas of improvement and address them proactively.
  • Onboarding support:  Introduce programmes that cater to freshers and new joiners, ensuring a smooth transition into work. Leaders can also discuss the buddy system for new joiners to ease them into the organisation.
  • Financial wellness programmes: Educate younger employees on investment strategies and older employees on retirement planning to reduce financial stress.
  • Physical wellness programmes: Organise events like Stepathons or runs, encouraging employees to prioritise physical wellness and rejuvenate themselves.

By embracing unconventional initiatives such as nature retreats, art therapy, and pet-friendly policies, businesses can foster work environments prioritising employee well-being. These practices cultivate resilience and show a commitment to employee mental health, which is essential for overall productivity.
